Obverse description Facing three-quarter bust of Pope John Paul II wearing papal skullcap (zucchetto) and vestments, set within a slightly recessed central field. The encircling legend IOANNES PAVLVS II P.M. A.XII MCMXC runs along the upper periphery in bold relief lettering. The engraver's signature A. CANEVARI appears in the lower field beneath the bust, flanked on either side by a small decorative olive or laurel branch motif. The overall composition is austere and dignified, rendered in a restrained sculptural style characteristic of Vatican coinage of this period.
