| Reverse description | Allegorical scene inspired by Michelangelo's Creation of Adam: the figure of God, rendered in close-up with a bearded, aged visage occupying the left field, extends a large cupped hand in which the newly created Adam kneels in a supplicant posture with arms raised. Rays of divine breath emanate from the upper left, suffusing the composition with a sense of sacred animation. The mint mark R appears to the right of centre in the field. The legend CITTA' DEL VATICANO arcs along the upper rim, while the denomination L. 200 is inscribed in the lower exergue. |

The 1988 Vatican annual coin set was issued during the tenth year of John Paul II's pontificate, a milestone the Vatican marked with a themed program drawn from Genesis. The 200 Lire was part of a complete set depicting scenes from the creation narrative — a deliberate iconographic program rather than a single commemorative issue.
Bronzital, an aluminum-bronze alloy adopted by the Italian Republic and carried over into Vatican coinage, was chosen for this denomination partly to deter counterfeiting of the higher-value pieces in circulating sets.
