San Marino issued this piece as part of its FAO-themed series, contributing to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's ongoing campaign to draw international attention to global food production and hunger. Small states like San Marino were among the more enthusiastic participants in the FAO coin program — the series gave their mints legitimate international visibility, and the coins themselves were collected far more than they circulated. Most examples saw no commercial use whatsoever.
