Turkey's state mint, the Darphane, produced a series of commemorative gold issues honoring foreign heads of state, and this piece — struck in the first year of Obama's presidency — reflects the considerable diplomatic goodwill between Ankara and Washington at that moment. Obama had visited Turkey in April 2009, his first presidential trip to a Muslim-majority country, a gesture that carried substantial political weight in both capitals.
Struck in 22-karat gold at 36 grams, this is not a small production piece quietly slipped into a bullion program. The Darphane issued these in limited quantities for the collector market, and surviving examples rarely appear outside Turkish auction houses.
