Issued to mark the 650th anniversary of the founding of the Moldavian Principality, traditionally dated to 1359 when Bogdan I broke from Hungarian suzerainty and established an independent voivodeship east of the Carpathians. The National Bank has produced commemorative gold issues sparingly, and this remains one of the heavier gold pieces in their catalog at just under a troy ounce.
