Additional information

Ľudovít Fulla (1902–1980) was among the most distinctive voices in Slovak modernism, drawing heavily on folk art traditions at a time when socialist realism was the mandated aesthetic across Czechoslovakia. His refusal to fully conform made him a complicated figure for state patronage — celebrated enough to receive official recognition, idiosyncratic enough to remain peripheral to the mainstream communist cultural apparatus.

The 2002 issue marked the centenary of his birth. Národná banka Slovenska had by this point established a consistent commemorative program honoring Slovak cultural figures, this coin falling in a run that had already covered Janko Alexy and Mikuláš Galanda.
