Imrich Karvaš served as governor of the National Bank of Slovakia during the wartime Slovak State and used his position to systematically obstruct Nazi economic exploitation — delaying gold transfers, sheltering Jewish employees, and channeling funds toward resistance networks. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944 following the Slovak National Uprising and survived Mauthausen. Postwar Czechoslovakia rewarded him with show trials and imprisonment under the Communist regime instead.
The coin was issued on the centenary of his birth, a rehabilitation that took decades longer than it should have.
