Bardejov's medieval town center and fortifications earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000, and this issue followed four years later as part of Slovakia's ongoing series commemorating its most significant protected sites. The town itself survived the medieval period remarkably intact partly due to its strategic importance as a northern trade route hub, and partly because it avoided the large-scale 19th-century "restoration" projects that altered so many comparable Central European towns beyond recognition.
