| Obverse description | Brown-toned note with a vignette of Mercury at left, a row of three crowned civic arms — those of Surabaya, Batavia, and Semarang — set within laurel wreaths at top center, and a portrait vignette of Jan Pieterszoon Coen in period ruffled collar at right. The main legends and denomination text are rendered in intaglio, with a fine guilloche underprint underlying the central field. The overall composition is framed by ornate typographic borders characteristic of Enschedé's late-nineteenth-century engraving style. |
