The 8th series was Switzerland's longest-running modern note program, commissioned in the 1970s as a contingency backup and not actually released into circulation until 1995–96 — a gap of roughly two decades between production readiness and public issue. By that point, some of the printing had already aged in storage. The 200 Franc denomination, one of the higher-value everyday notes in Swiss commerce, accumulated an unusually large number of signature combinations across its run, reflecting the frequent turnover in both Directorate and Vice-Directorate posts at the SNB during this period.
Jörg Zintzmeyer designed the full series. Orell Füssli has printed Swiss banknotes without interruption since the National Bank's founding; no outside contractor has ever been used for a circulating Swiss issue.
