Additional information

Hungary's conservation coinage program of the early 1990s coincided with the country's post-communist restructuring, when environmental legislation was being rewritten almost from scratch. The white stork had long occupied an unusual position in Hungarian rural culture — nesting on chimneys and roof beams by tacit agreement with farmers — but actual breeding populations had declined sharply through the 1970s and 1980s due to wetland drainage and pesticide use along their sub-Saharan migration corridors.

The .500 fineness reflects Hungary's practical silver coinage standards of the period rather than any commemorative economy.
