This coin commemorates the bicentennial of the Greek War of Independence, which began in 1821 when regional uprisings coalesced into a sustained revolt against Ottoman rule. The flag referenced dates to the First National Assembly at Epidaurus in January 1822, where delegates formally declared Greek independence and codified early symbols of the nascent state.
The Bank of Greece issued several denominations for the 2021 bicentenary program, of which this gold piece is among the higher-value collector strikes.
