Obverse description The Portuguese coat of arms is superimposed upon a reproduction of Toscanelli's cartographic map of 1474, framed within a hexagonal border. The map depicts Europe and Africa to the right and Asia with Japan (Cipangu) to the left, bisected by the equatorial line. The denomination '200 ESCUDOS' and the date '1991' appear in the lower portion of the field, with the legend 'REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA' and mintmaster mark 'INCM D'ECA' inscribed around the design.

Reverse description Toscanelli's world map forms the background field, upon which a stylized caravel sails to the left crewed by three mariners, each bearing instruments and symbols of exploration: a rudder, a navigational chart, an astrolabe, and a sword bearing the Cross of the Order of Christ. The upper legend 'NAVEGAÇÕES PARA OCIDENTE' arcs across the top of the design, while the dates '1452' and '1486' appear in the lower field, denoting the chronological span of Portugal's westward navigational expeditions.
