Additional information

Portugal's "Novo Mundo" series was issued to mark the Quincentenary of Columbus's 1492 voyage, with INCM producing each design in multiple metals simultaneously — gold, silver, and the notably rare palladium variant. The palladium strikes were produced in extremely limited quantities, as the metal was then trading at prices that made production economically marginal and collector demand for palladium coinage was poorly understood by most national mints.

By 1992, palladium had only recently begun appearing in numismatic programs worldwide, and Portugal was among the earliest European state issuers to commit to it as a proof-quality medium.
