Additional information

The Corte-Real family's connection to North American exploration remains genuinely unresolved. Gaspar Corte-Real reached Newfoundland and Labrador around 1500–1501, but neither he nor his brother Miguel — who sailed to find him — ever returned to Portugal. Both expeditions simply vanished, leaving the Crown with no reports, no survivors, and no clear account of what was found.

This 2000 issue belongs to INCM's long-running commemorative program marking the Portuguese Discoveries quincentenary, which produced dozens of collector pieces through the 1990s. The .925 silver specification is consistent across the higher-tier releases in that series.
