| Reverse description | A detailed depiction of a Portuguese caravel under full sail dominates the central field, rendered in fine relief with rigging, flags, and hull detail characteristic of late 15th-century exploration vessels. To the upper right, the heraldic arms of the Corte-Real family are displayed within a shield. In the upper arc of the coin, the archaic Portuguese inscription Esta he a tera Dos Corte Reais curves along the legend, evoking the original historical cartographic notation. The dates 1501-1502, referencing the Corte-Real expeditions to Newfoundland, appear in the lower exergue. The engravers' names ISABEL C. / F. BRANCO and the INCM mint mark are inscribed along the lower rim, all within a beaded border. |
