| Reverse description | A detailed cartographic depiction of the coastline of Newfoundland occupies the central field, referencing the Portuguese voyages of exploration in the early sixteenth century. A period caravel with lateen sails is shown sailing to the left across the mapped waters. To the right of the composition, the armorial bearings of the Corte-Real family are prominently displayed. The inscribed legend along the upper arc reads 'Esta he a tera Dos Corte Reais', while the dates '1501-1502' in the lower field commemorate Gaspar Corte-Real's explorations of Newfoundland during those years. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. |
