Reverse description A period Portuguese sailing vessel is depicted navigating to the left across open seas, symbolising the 1498 arrival of Vasco da Gama's fleet at the island of Mozambique in present-day northern Mozambique, one of the earliest Portuguese footholds in East Africa. To the left of the composition, a traditional native sailing dhow provides historical and cultural contrast. The inscription MOCAMBIQUE arches along the upper rim, while the date of arrival, 1 DE MARCO 1498, is inscribed in the lower field or exergue, commemorating the quincentenary of the Portuguese discovery of the Mozambique coast.
