Reverse description The reverse presents a dramatic maritime composition commemorating Vasco da Gama's arrival at Mozambique on 2 March 1498. A large Portuguese carrack under full sail dominates the right portion of the field, rendered in fine engraved detail with rigging and pennants visible; a smaller lateen-rigged vessel appears to the left amid stylised waves. An allegorical cloud figure or wind deity is depicted in the upper left field. The legend MOCAMBIQUE arcs along the upper border, with the commemorative date 2 DE MARCO / 1498 inscribed in two lines along the lower exergue. The engraver's initials appear along the lower left rim.
