Additional information

Portugal's long series of commemorative 200 Escudos issues — produced through the 1990s to mark the Discoveries — included both base-metal circulation strikes and gold collector versions struck to the same design. This gold piece honors the 1513 voyage of Juan Ponce de León, whose expedition to the Florida peninsula constituted one of the earliest documented European landings on the North American mainland. Whether Ponce de León was genuinely searching for the fabled Fountain of Youth or simply pursuing a land grant is a question historians have never conclusively settled.

Issued in the final year before euro adoption rendered the escudo obsolete.
