This coin belongs to the long-running Portuguese commemorative escudo series issued before euro adoption in 2002 rendered the denomination obsolete. Magellan's circumnavigation — completed in 1522 under Elcano after Magellan's death in the Philippines — was a Spanish-funded expedition, a fact Portugal has always found diplomatically awkward given that Magellan was born Portuguese and trained under the Portuguese crown before defecting to Castile.
The Gomes reference .03 suffix places this as the silver variant within a multi-metal issue, the .925 fineness being INCM's consistent standard for collector escudo pieces through the 1990s.
