Reverse description The reverse presents a three-quarter length portrait of Duarte Pacheco Pereira, the renowned Portuguese explorer and military commander, depicted in period dress with a beard, holding a staff or lance in his right hand and a globe or orb in his left, rendered in a classical commemorative style. The legend DUARTE PACHECO PEREIRA arcs boldly around the upper periphery within a beaded border. The birth and death years 1460 and 1531 are inscribed to the left and right of the figure respectively. The engraver's signature E. BYRNE appears at the lower right of the field, and the mint mark INCM is noted at the lower left.
