Reverse description Four young male busts are depicted in profile to the right, representing the Japanese Christian emissaries sent to Europe between 1582 and 1590 as envoys of the Christianised Daimios (feudal lords) of Kyushu. A Roman column stands prominently to the left of the busts, flanking bilingual inscriptions in Latin script and Japanese characters that identify the historical mission. The composition conveys the encounter between Renaissance Europe and feudal Japan through juxtaposed architectural and figural elements.
