| Additional information |
Issued to mark the 500th anniversary of Pedro Álvares Cabral's landfall on the Brazilian coast in April 1500, this gold piece belongs to a larger Portuguese commemorative program that ran through the late 1990s under the Discoveries series. Portugal minted extensively in both silver and gold across that decade, and the 1999 issues were among the final releases before the escudo was rendered obsolete by euro adoption in 2002. The KM#718b designation distinguishes the gold striking from its silver counterpart — the same dies, different metal, sharply different survival rates.
