The African Beach Games debuted in Sal, Cape Verde in November 2019 — the first edition of a competition organized under the auspices of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa. Cape Verde's role as host nation made the commemorative issue a matter of national priority, and the mint release closely tracked the event itself.
