Additional information

Issued to mark the bicentennial of Alexander Pushkin's birth, this coin was struck by Armenia despite Pushkin having no particular connection to the country — a reflection of how deeply Soviet cultural policy had embedded the Russian poet as a pan-Soviet figure across all fifteen republics. The centennial in 1899 had been similarly treated as a supranational event throughout the empire.

Armenia was one of several post-Soviet states that produced commemorative issues for the 1999 anniversary, a quiet indicator of how selectively the newly independent republics were still drawing on the shared cultural inventory of the USSR.
