Armenia's "Flora" series, of which this issue is a part, was commissioned to document indigenous and regionally significant plant species — a numismatic program that ran alongside broader state efforts to catalog biodiversity in the South Caucasus. Pinus kochiana, the Caucasian pine, grows at elevations above 1,800 meters and is native to a narrow band stretching from eastern Turkey through Georgia and into Armenia's own Gegham and Zangezur ranges.
The aluminium bronze composition was a deliberate choice for the circulation-quality issues in this series, distinguishing them from the silver collector strikes produced concurrently for the same subjects.
