Palau's marine protection gold series, launched in 1994, predates the country's formal designation of its waters as a shark sanctuary by over a decade — that legislation didn't arrive until 2009, making it one of the first nationally enacted shark sanctuaries in the world. The 2000 issue falls mid-series, during a period when Palau was aggressively leveraging its numismatic program to fund environmental diplomacy it couldn't otherwise afford.
Struck to one troy ounce at .999 fineness, these were produced in extremely limited quantities — typically under 500 pieces per issue in the series — and sold primarily to collectors in Japan and Germany rather than circulating domestically.
