The 1999 Southeast Asian Games were hosted by Brunei for the first and, to date, only time — a deliberate prestige project under Hassanal Bolkiah at a moment when the sultanate's oil revenues were under strain following the 1997–98 Asian financial crisis and the very public collapse of Amedeo Corporation, the construction conglomerate run by the Sultan's brother Prince Jefri. The commemorative issue was pressed ahead regardless.
Struck to 22-karat standard in a 31.10g format that mirrors the troy ounce, placing its gold content just fractionally under one full ounce.
