Trial pieces for the 1958 Golden Jubilee issue were produced as presentation and approval strikes before the final gold coinage was authorized. This bronze example, gold-plated rather than struck in the actual emission metal, served the practical function of testing die quality and design approval without committing to the cost of gold blanks — a standard step in the production chain for high-denomination commemorative issues.
The jubilee marked 50 years since Selassié's 1908 elevation within the imperial court, not strictly his reign, since his formal coronation came in 1930.
