Additional information

The Gorch Fock II is the German Navy's sail training ship, launched in 1958 and still in active service — a vessel that has trained generations of Bundesmarine and Deutsche Marine officers. Liberia's issuance of this coin has nothing to do with any bilateral relationship; it reflects the country's long-running practice of licensing its name to commemorative coin programs aimed squarely at European collector markets, particularly German ones.

The Kahle reference catalog documents this as a small mintage issue in that series.
