The Super Incuse Maple Leaf series was introduced to mark the 40th anniversary of the original Gold Maple Leaf, first struck in 1979 — a coin that itself broke new ground by offering .999 fineness at a time when most sovereign bullion gold still topped out at .900. For this anniversary issue, the RCM inverted the design relief entirely, pressing the maple leaf deeply into the field rather than raising it above, a process requiring substantial retooling and die pressure adjustments that the mint did not publicly detail.
The 2 oz format is the largest in the Super Incuse lineup. Struck in .9999 fine gold, the series carried a face value engineered purely for legal tender status rather than any practical transactional use.
