Additional information

The Cook Islands' gold program of the early 2000s leaned heavily on Pacific exploration themes, and James Cook is the obvious centerpiece — he made three voyages through the region between 1768 and 1779, charting coastlines that European cartographers had left blank or filled with invention. His third voyage ended at Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii, in February 1779, where he was killed during a dispute over a stolen cutter.

KM# 131 is struck in four-nines fine gold at a full two troy ounces — a specification that places it firmly in the bullion-collectible category rather than genuine circulation coinage, as the Cook Islands has issued throughout this period under New Zealand monetary arrangements.
