Reverse description The reverse, designed by Canadian artist Laurie McGaw and engraved by José Osio, presents a detailed three-quarter profile full-length portrait of explorer Jacques Cartier standing atop a riverbank as he surveys the newly claimed land of Canada. Flanking him are French soldiers in period armour and an indigenous guide, the composition evoking the historical drama of Cartier's voyages of discovery in the sixteenth century. The legend CANADA arcs along the upper field, with the date 2013 and denomination 200 DOLLARS inscribed in the lower field, along with the artist's initials LM. The scene is rendered with exceptional sculptural relief characteristic of Royal Canadian Mint proof coinage.
