The Perth Mint's lunar series has been running since 1996, and the 2008 Mouse issue falls in the second cycle — the first having concluded in 2007. Each two-ounce piece in this series is struck to a declared mintage ceiling, with the Mouse sitting at 30,000 pieces, though actual production rarely reached the stated maximum in earlier years of the second series.
Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, adopted by the Perth Mint in 1998, appears here without the added titles used on Australian circulation coinage.
