Australia's platinum Koala series launched in 1987, making Perth one of the earliest mints globally to issue a bullion platinum coin program alongside the South African Krugerrand platinum and the American Platinum Eagle. The one-troy-ounce $200 denomination has always sat at the top of the Koala weight range, and 2000 was the final year before the series was quietly discontinued — platinum bullion demand had thinned considerably as automotive catalytic converter speculation cooled from its late-1990s peak.
Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Elizabeth II, introduced to Australian coinage in 1999, appears here in only its second year of use on the platinum Koala.
