Australia's platinum Koala series, launched in 1987, was among the first government-issued platinum bullion programs in the world — competing directly with the Soviet Palladium Ballerina and the Isle of Man Noble for a market that was still deciding whether platinum had a future as an investment coin. The one-ounce $200 denomination was the flagship of the series from the start. Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II was adopted across Commonwealth coinage from 1998, which is precisely why this two-year type exists at all: the transition simply reset the portrait.
