| Obverse description | The third effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, as modelled by Raphael Maklouf, faces right wearing the King George IV State Diadem. The sovereign's draped bust is rendered in high relief against a polished field. The peripheral legend reads ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 1992, with the designer's initials RDM appearing below the truncation. |

| Additional information |
Australia's gold bullion program launched in 1986 with the Nugget series, but the Royal Australian Mint introduced the Kangaroo and native fauna issues in the early 1990s to compete directly with the Perth Mint's dominant Gold Nugget coinage. The echidna, one of only two surviving monotreme genera on Earth, was selected partly for its international novelty — foreign buyers found the animal's obscurity as compelling as its biology.
The .917 fineness places this outside the "four nines" standard of most modern bullion competitors, a deliberate nod to the traditional 22-karat crown gold specification.
