Cook's first Pacific voyage — nominally a Royal Society expedition to observe the 1769 transit of Venus from Tahiti — carried sealed Admiralty orders to be opened only after the astronomical observations were complete. Those orders directed Cook to search for the hypothetical southern continent, Terra Australis Incognita, and to claim any suitable lands for the Crown. The Solomon Islands themselves had been visited by Álvaro de Mendaña in 1568, then effectively lost to European navigation for two centuries before Cook's generation began systematically closing those gaps.
At 155.5 grams this is a five-troy-ounce issue, a format typically reserved for prestige collector pieces with strictly limited mintages.
