Additional information

The Battle of the Bulge — launched December 16, 1944 — was Germany's last major offensive on the Western Front, a desperate attempt to split Allied lines through the Ardennes and seize Antwerp. The offensive initially succeeded in creating a salient roughly 85 kilometers deep, catching Allied commanders largely off-guard. American forces, particularly those encircled at Bastogne, held long enough for Patton's Third Army to break through from the south by December 26.

Cook Islands has issued gold in this weight class under its commemorative program for decades, with pieces typically struck by the Pobjoy Mint or BH Mayer on contract.
