Additional information

Palau only gained UN membership in 1994, one year before this coin was struck — the country had spent the previous decade in Compact of Free Association negotiations with the United States, a process that delayed its international recognition until it was among the last Pacific island nations admitted. The 50th anniversary issue therefore carries an unintentional irony: Palau was celebrating a milestone it had only just qualified to observe.
