Additional information

Fiji gained independence from Britain on 10 October 1970, and this gold issue marks the decade that followed — a period during which the country navigated the considerable tension between its indigenous Fijian and Indo-Fijian populations while maintaining a parliamentary system inherited from Westminster. The 1970 independence itself was notably negotiated rather than demanded, with Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara central to the process.

The .9166 fineness places this squarely in the 22-karat crown gold tradition favored by Commonwealth commemorative issues of the period.
