Additional information

Issued to mark forty years since the 1953 French exile of Sultan Mohammed V — the event Moroccan historiography calls the Revolution du Roi et du Peuple — this coin appeared during a period when Hassan II was actively rehabilitating the nationalist narrative around his father's deposition. The French colonial administration had calculated that removing Mohammed V would suppress independence sentiment; it had precisely the opposite effect, galvanizing mass resistance and accelerating the path to independence by 1956.
