Issued to mark the inauguration of the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, completed in 1993 after six years of construction involving roughly 35,000 Moroccan artisans. The project was financed largely through a mandatory public subscription — effectively a compulsory levy on Moroccan citizens — which generated considerable resentment even as the building itself became a source of national pride.
The .925 silver specification places this squarely in commemorative territory; it was never intended for circulation.
