Schweitzer spent decades at his self-founded hospital in Lambaréné, Gabon — not in The Gambia, with which he had no historical connection whatsoever. These small-format gold issues from The Gambia in the 2010s were produced for the collector bullion market, licensing recognizable figures to generate seigniorage revenue rather than to mark any genuine national relationship with the subject.
