The Tamayo series takes its name from Franz Tamayo, the early twentieth-century poet, philosopher, and politician whose mixed Aymara and creole heritage made him a complicated but enduring symbol of Bolivian cultural identity. CBN printed this denomination across three series spanning fifteen years — an unusually long production run that reflects the note's workhorse status in everyday commerce rather than any redesign imperative.
Canadian Bank Note Company has held a long relationship with the BCB, and the cotton substrate here is notably prone to soiling at the fold lines in Bolivian highland circulation conditions, where humidity and dust accelerate wear disproportionately to use.
