Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of UNICEF, this coin was part of a coordinated global program in which dozens of countries released commemorative silver pieces under the same theme in 1996 and 1997. Thailand's participation reflected Rama IX's long personal association with humanitarian development work — the king's rural development projects had drawn UNICEF attention for decades prior. The series as a whole was heavily marketed to collectors rather than circulated, leaving most surviving examples in original packaging.
