Reverse description The reverse presents a dignified half-length portrait of King Sigismund I the Old (Zygmunt I Stary), shown facing slightly to the right, attired in royal robes with a fur-trimmed mantle and a crown upon his head. The king's hands rest before him, conveying regal composure in a Renaissance sculptural style. The legend ZYGMUNT I STARY arcs along the upper border, flanked by the regnal dates 1506 - 1548 in the upper field to the right. The word PRÓBA (trial/pattern) appears in the right field, identifying this piece as a trial strike. The engraver's mark appears in the lower field. The design was executed by Roussanka Nowakowska.

Additional information

Poland's 1994 collector program honoring Sigismund I the Old coincided with the final years of the old złoty before redenomination — the currency was abolished entirely on January 1, 1995, replaced at a ratio of 10,000 old złotych to one new grosz. Trial strikes from this transitional window are institutional survivors rather than circulated pieces, produced for approval or archival purposes and almost never released through normal channels. The Fischer and ParM references confirm this piece's status as a pattern, not a currency issue.
