Mamming is a village in Lower Bavaria that almost certainly had no business issuing emergency currency at this denomination — yet here it is. The Darlehenskassen-Verein, a cooperative lending association of the type that spread through rural Germany during the Weimar inflation, was legally permitted to issue Notgeld when the central supply of Reichsmarks failed to keep pace with daily price movements. By mid-1923, the hyperinflation was moving so fast that a 200,000 Mark note was a practical necessity, not an extravagance.
