Comments

Vereinigte Glanzstoff-Fabriken was a major synthetic fibre manufacturer — one of the precursors to what eventually became Enka and later part of the Akzo Nobel industrial group. During the hyperinflation of 1923, German private firms, municipalities, and utilities issued their own notgeld simply because the Reichsbank could not print legal tender fast enough to meet payroll. This note from the Oberbruch works is that kind of emergency wage currency, designed to get money into workers' hands on payday rather than as any broader circulating medium.

Factory-issued notgeld of this type rarely traveled far from the issuing plant and was typically redeemed quickly, which makes survivors somewhat scarcer than equivalent municipal issues.
