Additional information

Struck on the 75th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign, this issue commemorates a battle that killed an estimated 130,000 soldiers from both sides between April 1915 and January 1916. For Turkey, Gallipoli carries a weight that goes well beyond military history — Mustafa Kemal's role commanding the 57th Infantry Regiment there became the founding myth around which his later political authority was constructed. The regiment was effectively annihilated following his order that troops hold their position without ammunition, buying time at the cost of the unit itself.
